On Thursday we made our way from Berchtesgaden to Bingen, near Frankfurt on the Rhine River. Under normal conditions, this drive should have taken 5 to 5.5 hours. Instead, we got a taste of the notorious traffic congestion that can happen on the Autobahn, particularly around construction and the drive took us 9.5 hours!! The first half of the drive was smooth sailing and we made it as far as Stuttgart in the expected time. After that things began to slowly unravel and we went from one 'stau' (traffic jam in German) to another.
The drive from Stuttgart to Bingen should take 2 hours. For us it took 6. Noah and Catherine were amazing and kept it together until the very last 1/2 hour (even with the LeapPad battery dying halfway there). Needless to say we were relieved to finally make it to our apartment and get. out. of. the. car! ;)
Amidst the boredom of the last 6 hours of the drive, I took a handful of pictures out of the car windows ....

This part of Germany has really embraced wind power - more on that in tomorrow's blog.

Even if you don't understand German you can tell that sign says the construction will last for 3 more years!

A pretty little village we passed.

Speed limit signs (100km/hr) intermingled with the 'Stau' (Traffic Jam) warning signs
Even if it was dark, we made it safely and are glad to be back in this part of Germany again. We'll be sure to stop at every playground we see over the next few days to thank the kids for being so good.
